Agape Orphanage & Learning Center originated six years ago in a town just outside of Mae Sot, on the cusp of the Thailand/Burma border. David Min Naing, the tenderhearted founder and operator of Agape, has created a safe and loving environment for 300 children, aged 15 months to fifteen years old, 130 of whom are orphans. A Karen refugee himself, David has rescued over one hundred Karen migrant children from unsafe living conditions. The Karen people, whose villagers usually live along the border, make up the third largest ethnic group in Burma. With economic and political turmoil in Burma, children are often left to fend for themselves. Every child at Agape has his or her own unique story, but they share a common theme—their life at Agape is infinitely better than it was in their previous situation. The orphans at Agape have endured hardships that no person should ever experience—trafficking, living and working in garbage dumps, forced conscription, physical and verbal abuse, untreated disease, and neglect.
The children here, despite their traumatic pasts, have such pure and generous hearts, always offering hugs or food from their plates. Though the children are looked after, they are extremely self-sufficient and industrious. They take their daily chores and responsibilities seriously. I have never met such an amazing group of young people in my life.
David’s priority is to keep the children safe and healthy. Unfortunately, every day is a struggle for David as funding has been greatly cut. Agape must rely on donations and volunteers. Although the children are well-fed at the moment, they are in serious need of basic items such as shampoo, soap, and clothing. Please consider making a donation to Agape. Any contribution will directly benefit the welfare of the children. I feel so grateful to be a part of this very special place. By contributing, you will become an integral part of Agape as well.
Be sure to pass this site on to friends, family, or anyone you know!
Love and Appreciation,
Karen
